Netflix’s 81-Minute “Bourne Meets Die Hard” Action Thriller Is Officially One of Streaming’s Biggest Hits

Ever since The Bourne Identity perfected the formula of the amnesiac hero in 2002, there has been a string of copycats hoping to cash in on its success. Netflix even got in on the action in 2022 with a thriller that combines the mystery of the Bourne franchise with the confined setting of Die Hard, and while it wasn’t well-received at the time, it’s now officially a global smash four years later.

Netflix Scores Big With ‘Transformers’ Star’s Intense Action Thriller

Released on Oct. 12, 2022, Blackout stars Josh Duhamel (Transformer) as Cain, a man who wakes up in a Mexican hospital with no memory of who he is, or the special set of skills he possesses. As his memories gradually come back, things get even more complicated when armed cartel members descend on the building, searching for something Cain has stolen. Trapped in a hospital crawling with enemies, he must fight his way to safety whilst at the same time figuring out who to trust.

Also starring Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch), Omar Chaparro (Vengeance), Nick Nolte (Warrior), and Lou Ferrigno Jr. (S.W.A.T.), Blackout is an intense action thriller that features Duhamel wielding all manner of weaponry. Nothing is off limits in his fight for survival, including hypodermic needles and bedpans (after all, he is in a hospital).

Returning to Netflix this month after being removed from the platform in 2025, Blackout has proven to be a huge smash with viewers. Not only did it enter the daily Top 10 chart, but for the week of Oct. 19–25, it came in sixth on the list of overall English-language hits. The film earned 3.2 million views for a total of 4.4 million hours watched, while first place went to Ben Affleck’s Animals with 10.7 million views. Check out the full breakdown below.

What Are People Saying About ‘Blackout’?

Of course, having millions of views doesn’t necessarily make a movie good, and in the case of Blackout, reviews of the film are mixed. Though it doesn’t have enough to give it a score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the ones it does have call the movie everything from “goofily entertaining” to “uninspired.”

On the audience side of things, Blackout holds a dismal rating of just 45%, and has been called a “wannabe Bourne/Die Hard,” “poorly executed,” and “an abysmal, hamfisted mess.” That being said, there are some who appreciated all the action, as one user deemed it a “good old shoot em up movie.”

In the end, it all boils down to personal taste. While Blackout certainly doesn’t bring anything new to the genre, it is worth watching at least once thanks to its improvised weapons, shootouts, and brutal hand-to-hand combat. Duhamel’s character might not be on the same level as Jason Bourne or John McClane, but he holds his own against a plethora of bag guys, making for a fun (and sometimes frustrating) action thriller.
