After 32 Years, Kevin Bacon’s Intense Action Thriller Officially Scores a New Release

Kevin bacon in the river wild

From dancing into pop-culture history in Footloose to projecting pure menace in Mystic River and trading blows with mutants in X-Men: First Class, Kevin Bacon has built a legendary career on his chameleon energy. Yet among his vast filmography, there is one particular mid-90s survival film that pushed his capacity for raw intensity to the absolute limit. It was a white-knuckle ride that gripped audiences when it opened in theaters, and now, more than three decades later, this forgotten gem is finally returning to the spotlight.

The River Wild cast Bacon opposite Meryl Streep in a high-stakes game of survival that turned a family vacation into a nightmare. He portrayed a charismatic criminal who took a family hostage during a white-water rafting trip, holding Streep’s character – a skilled former river guide – at gunpoint to pilot their raft through a notoriously lethal stretch of rapids. And now audiences will be able to experience the pulse-pounding tension all over again, courtesy of a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release from boutique label Kino Lorber.

The upcoming release marks the very first time The River Wild will be available on 4K Ultra HD, making it a monumental upgrade for physical media collectors who have previously had to rely on standard high-definition formats. Sourced directly from a new 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative, the film has been restored with enhanced High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Dolby Vision to breathe new life into the movie’s sweeping wilderness backdrops and place viewers right in the middle of the roaring rapids.

The 4K Blu-ray of The River Wild channels the movie’s intensity through its cover design, which features the cast aboard a raft, rushing down the treacherous wilderness rivers. According to Blu-ray.com, the case houses two discs – one 4K Blu-ray and one standard Blu-ray – boasting several special features, including a brand-new interview with co-star David Strathairn, alongside a series of freshly recorded audio commentaries from prominent film scholars and critics dissecting Curtis Hanson’s directorial style.
