Transformers star and Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg continues to be a major action thriller draw, and one of his lesser-known (and lesser-loved) efforts is now finding redemption on streaming almost a decade later. Delivering the kind of no-nonsense action movie thrills that we all expect and adore about many of Wahlberg’s action thriller outings, this particular example has a major ace up its sleeve as it sees the 2 Guns star join forces with a grossly unsung action icon.
And He Would Walk 22 Miles…
Directed by Peter Berg, who has collaborated with Wahlberg on several occasions with the likes of Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day, their 2018 action thriller endeavor Mile 22 tells the gripping tale of a CIA unit that quickly finds itself under heavy fire while attempting to transport a high-value asset.
Wahlberg’s CIA operative, James Silva, leads a small but lethal paramilitary team on an urgent and dangerous mission. Tasked with transporting a foreign intelligence asset from an American embassy in Southeast Asia to an airfield for extraction, a distance of the eponymous 22 miles, Silva and his crew soon find themselves not only in a race against time as the city’s military, police, and street gangs who want to reclaim the asset, but also under threat from the asset himself.
Which makes sense when you find out that this key asset is played by none other than The Raid star Iko Uwais. While Mile 22 sadly doesn’t give Uwais the chance to really spread his wings and throw his fists to the extent The Raid franchise does, marking another wasted opportunity from Hollywood when it comes to best utilizing Uwais, there are short bursts of excitement that allow the actor and martial artist to once again demonstrate his penchant for Pencak Silat.
The Action Thriller Has Seen a Major Resurgance on Streaming
Despite counting Peter Berg, Mark Wahlberg, Iko Uwais, John Malkovich (Con Air), and Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead) among its ranks, Mile 22 was largely panned upon release, with the action thriller standing at just 23% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences somewhat more thrilled and scoring the movie 44% on the Popcornmeter. And even with the star power and no-nonsense appeal, Mile 22 also flopped quite spectacularly at the box office, grossing just $66 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $60 million.
But in the years since, audiences have begun to rediscover and reevaluate Mile 22. The action thriller is now taking over the popular streaming platform Paramount+ in Canada, and in recent months has also dominated the free streaming platform Tubi and the world’s most popular platform
Netflix in the U.S. and globally.
Mark Wahlberg continues to lead action thriller pictures, and will next reunite with Contraband and 2 Guns director Baltasar Kormákur for Netflix’s The Big Fix, as well as join forces with The Rip and CopShop director Joe Carnahan for The Operator.
