It’s always exciting to see big-name actors work together on a project for the first time. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise, Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn in The African Queen…a lot of energy is created when worlds collide.
This new pair-up may not be quite on that level, but it’s exciting nonetheless. Deadline reports that Taron Egerton and James McAvoy are teaming up for a new conspiracy thriller. Both actors have built impressive careers. McAvoy drew interest in 2003 for playing Leto II Atreides in Children of Dune, starred in acclaimed dramas like The Last King of Scotland and Atonement, and had important roles in the X-Men and Chronicles of Narnia franchises. Meanwhile, Egerton broke out in the 2014 comedy-action hit Kingsman: The Secret Service before winning acclaim for playing Elton John in Rocketman. He’s also led TV series like Black Bird and Smoke.

The new movie will also star Alicia Vikander, who won an Oscar for her role in The Danish Girl on top of winning accolades for her roles in movies like Ex Machina and starring in franchise fare like Tomb Raider. Vikander worked with Taron Egerton on the drama Testament of Youth and with McAvoy on the romantic thriller Submergence, but this will be the first time they all work together on one project.
At the moment, we know very little about the actual movie these three will star in, not even the title. However, we do know that it will be written and directed by Armando Iannucci, which is very promising. Iannucci specializes in biting political satires, including movies like In the Loop and The Death of Stalin, and TV shows like In the Thick of It and Veep. Admittedly, his last couple of TV projects for HBO, Avenue 5 and The Franchise, haven’t made as big a splash, but his record still speaks for itself.
Knowing Iannucci, this new ‘conspiracy thriller’ may very well have some comedic bite to it. It’s being produced by BAFTA winner Kevin Loader, who also produced In the Loop, The Death of Stalin, and Avenue 5, as well as Iannucci’s 2019 movie The Personal History of David Copperfield. That was the last film Iannucci worked on before this new one.
