Ridley Scott just scored big after his 2024 action epic was added to Netflix. A month after the movie landed on the platform, it is still one of the biggest films on streaming. And yet, the sequel still hasn’t been confirmed. Ridley Scott might be having a hard time at the moment after his newest sci-fi movie, The Dog Stars, crashed and burned in theaters. The film has been pulled early and is now hoping to recoup the rest of its budget through PVOD sales. That also marks another financial failure from Scott this decade, following Napoleon and The Last Duel. However, his 2024 action epic raked it in at the box office, and it’s now one of Netflix’s biggest movies this week.
Along with the original, Ridley Scott’s sequel, Gladiator II, is now streaming on Netflix. Both movies were added at the start of October, and quickly rose up the streaming charts. However, it is Gladiator II that has left audiences truly entertained. Gladiator has since dropped off the streaming charts, but Gladiator II remains one of Netflix’s biggest movies globally. What’s more, TUDUM just dropped its latest weekly streaming figures, and they show just how successful Gladiator II has been.
According to TUDUM, Gladiator II is the ninth most popular movie on Netflix this week. This is the fourth consecutive week that Gladiator II has held a place on Netflix’s global top 10. Over the past seven days, it accrued 3 million views from 7.4 million hours watched. Ben Affleck’s Animals holds the top spot for the third consecutive week, having earned a staggering 10.7 million views this past week. Animals also has unlikely competition in second place in the form of Hot Wheels Let’s Race: Attack of the T-Rex.

‘Gladiator II’ Couldn’t Quite Live Up to the Original
In Gladiator II, Paul Mescal plays an older Lucius, who fled Rome after Maximus’ (Russell Crowe) death at the end of the first movie. After being transported back to Rome as a prisoner of war during the Roman conquest of Africa, Lucius swears revenge against the entire Roman Legion, before learning the truth about his heritage.
The sequel was good, although many felt it felt too hamstrung by the original, frequently weaponizing nostalgia to call back to Gladiator‘s iconic hero. As a result, it only holds a 70% Rotten Tomatoes rating, compared to the original’s 80% score. That disparity is also reflected in the audience reviews. Gladiator II holds a decent 80% rating. But Gladiator‘s is far stronger at 87%.
‘Gladiator II’ Was Nearly Very Different
Ridley Scott has been trying to get Gladiator II off the ground for years. At one point, that even meant that musician Nick Cave wrote a script for the film. Crowe would have returned as Maximus, who is stuck in purgatory. In the film, Maximus would have been tasked by the Roman and Greek gods to return to Earth and kill the young Jesus Christ to stop the rise of Christianity… Yup, you read that right.
