The streaming era has been quietly rewriting the critical record on ’90s action movies. Films critics waved off as disposable thirty years ago keep finding second lives on Netflix, partly because the things reviewers held against them then barely register as flaws anymore. The latest example is arguably the most interesting one, because it’s the rare Van Damme picture where the fighting was never really the point.
‘Nowhere to Run’ Is Finding a Surprising Second Life on Netflix
Yellowstone Season 1 Trailer
Nowhere to Run, the 1993 drama that critics largely dismissed on release, is currently sitting at number four on Netflix’s US movie chart, ahead of Ron Howard’s Far and Away and trailing only much newer fare like Surviving Hurricane Otis and Ben Affleck’s juggernaut thriller Animals. The film casts Van Damme as Sam Gillen, an escaped convict who goes to ground on a struggling farm owned by a widow, played by Rosanna Arquette, raising two kids on land that a wealthy developer wants cleared by any means necessary. The stranger with a violent past who reluctantly becomes a family’s protector is one of the oldest frameworks in American film, borrowed openly from Shane, and the modern comparisons draw themselves.
/* Streaming Top 10 vignette. All rules are scoped under .st10.
One card with two faces (Movies, TV) that flips in 3D. Movies follows the
reader’s light/dark setting and TV is the opposite, so a flip always
changes the colour scheme. Neutrals are sampled from movieweb.com; the
open streamer’s brand colour (adapted for contrast) drives the frame,
active tab, highlight, change arrows and NEW badge. */

The drifter who solves problems with his fists and can’t stay is essentially the Reacher formula, while the ruthless land grab threatening a family homestead is the engine that has powered Yellowstone and most of its spin-offs. Netflix viewers have demonstrated an apparently bottomless appetite for both of those shows’ DNA, so a film that fuses them with a Van Damme performance was probably always going to travel well once the algorithm surfaced it. Unfortunately, the film’s 1993 reception was fairly rough, with critics giving it 35 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 41 on Metacritic.
The Film Once Looked Like an Odd Fit for Van Damme’s Action-Star Image
Many reviews viewed its restrained, melancholy tone as a mismatch for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s screen persona. Yet the signs of a disconnect were there from the start. CinemaScore audiences graded it a B+, and the film did solid business with $64 million worldwide against a modest budget, performing especially well overseas. Over the years, it has accumulated a quiet cult following among fans who rank it among Van Damme’s better films precisely because it asked him to act rather than simply fight, and his performance here, opposite an Arquette fresh off her indie-credibility run, is probably the closest he came in that era to the dramatic register he’d finally be celebrated for in 2008’s JCVD.
