Denzel Washington & Russell Crowe’s 106-Minute Sci-Fi Action Thriller Officially Sets New Streaming Release

Academy Award winner Denzel Washington joins forces with fellow Academy Award winner Russell Crowe in a long-forgotten sci-fi action thriller that’s now found a new streaming home. While both actors are now rightly considered Hollywood icons and two of the greatest actors, not just of their generation, but of all time, neither is immune to the wrath of the critics, and while this panned sci-fi effort may have been lost in the cinematic ether, it’s well overdue for a revival – if only to see these two greats butt heads during the early years of their respective careers.

Denzel Washington Faces off Against Russell Crowe’s AI Killer

Coming after acclaimed performances from Denzel Washington in the likes of Cry Freedom, Glory, Malcolm X, and Philadelphia, as well as equally acclaimed performances in Romper Stomper and Proof from Russell Crowe, the sci-fi action flick Virtuosity pits the pair against each other while transporting audiences to the far-flung era of…1999.

Directed by Brett Leonard (The Lawnmower Man), Washington takes the lead as Parker Barnes, a former cop who is imprisoned for killing the psychopath who murdered his family. While serving time, Barnes is recruited to test out a new virtual-reality program with the goal being to apprehend a computer-generated being called SID 6.7, played with scenery-chewing aplomb by Russell Crowe.

For you see, SID has been modeled on hundreds of deranged criminals and serial killers, including the man who killed Barnes’ family. Of course, the program quickly manages to escape the confines of the digital world and wreaks havoc in the real world. Now, Barnes might be the only one capable of capturing and destroying SID and ending his killing spree.

‘Virtuosity’ Is the Perfect Sci-Fi Action “Guilty Pleasure”

Despite boasting a powerhouse pair of actors and a gloriously high concept, Virtuosity was brutally maligned upon release and now holds scores of 29% and 32% from critics and audiences, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, Virtuosity can now be viewed as a fascinating time capsule, showing off not only two actors who would become some of the biggest names in Hollywood, but also how people foresaw the millennial future, and what we thought AI would be capable of (as it turns out, it’s just being used to make sterile adaptations of The Odyssey).

Boasting a reliably magnetic performance from Denzel Washington in a very different project for the Training Day star, as well as a grandstanding villain from Russell Crowe that falls somewhere between The Terminator and the Joker, Virtuosity is the kind of pitch perfect “guilty pleasure” cult classic that deserves to find a much bigger audience on streaming when it lands on Paramount+ on Nov. 1, 2026.

Virtuosity would not be the only time that Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe faced off, with 2007’s American Gangster flipping them to the opposite sides of the law. Thankfully, the two stars’ second effort fared far better, and stands at a “Certified Fresh” rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.
