Chris Hemsworth has effortlessly pivoted from the thunderous, mythical heights of Marvel’s Thor to the gritty, grounded realism of elite black-ops warfare. This transformation from a hammer-wielding god to a hyper-lethal mercenary has cemented his status as a global action icon, with Netflix’s blockbuster Extraction franchise serving as the ultimate catalyst.

Stepping into the tactical boots of the battle-hardened Tyler Rake, Hemsworth pushed his physical endurance to the absolute limit, anchoring a cinematic universe renowned for bone-crunching choreography. This journey began with the release of the original Extraction in April 2020, which quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched original films. The franchise’s success was further solidified with the debut of Extraction 2 in June 2023, which expanded the storyline and featured a critically acclaimed action sequence.

Netflix is capitalizing on this massive momentum by transforming the property into a sprawling, multi-project universe, with plans for additional installments to expand the lore of the franchise’s lethal underworld. The main event is the next chapter in the flagship film series, the aptly titled Extraction 3 – which has just achieved a major milestone.

Production on Extraction 3 has officially wrapped principal photography in Thailand, sending the action thriller sequel into post-production as it gears up for its forthcoming streaming debut. Hemsworth confirmed the milestone on Instagram, sharing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of his “crazy few weeks” filming intense action sequences.

At the helm for a third consecutive time is veteran stunt director Sam Hargrave, solidifying his status as the cornerstone of the franchise’s creative vision. Working from a screenplay by David Weil, Hargrave is set to deliver the series’ signature long-take action set pieces on an even larger scale. While precise plot specifics remain closely guarded, the narrative is expected to pick up from the dramatic fallout of Extraction 2, thrusting Hemsworth’s mercenary directly into a dangerous new assignment.

Principal photography officially commenced in July 2026, launching a grueling four-month shoot that spanned European locations, Sydney, and the New South Wales South Coast before wrapping up its final leg in Thailand. With filming now complete, the blockbuster sequel enters an extensive post-production phase, positioning Extraction 3 for a highly anticipated mid-2027 streaming debut on Netflix.

Question 1 of 3

The forthcoming entry is only the beginning of a much grander plan, as Netflix is actively developing a broader Extraction universe. Upcoming projects on the horizon include Mercenary, a Morocco-set television spin-off series starring Omar Sy, and Tygo, a South Korean feature film centered around martial arts icon Don Lee, guaranteeing that the pulse-pounding action is far from over.
